Flat-plate drag measurements with vortex generators in turbulent boundary layer
Direct drag measurements were obtained on a flat plate with a spanwise row of vortex generators near the leading edge, to produce an array of stream wise vortices within the approaching turbulent boundary layer. The object was to explore the possibility of modifying the large scale structure of the boundary layer through embedded longitudinal vortices with a view to obtaining a reduction in wall shear. Both obstacle and vane type vortex generators were tested at free stream velocities 40 ft/sec to 130 ft/sec corresponding to plate length Reynolds no. 0.3 million to 0.8 million with a nominal boundary layer thickness of approximately 0.6 in. at the leading edge. A few vortex generator configurations were tested both on and off the plate to measure the total drag as well as the plate drag alone. The obstacle type devices reduced the plate drag, indicating that the wake momentum defect predominated even in the presence of streamwise vortices. On Optimal and Fair Service Allocation in Mobile Cloud Computing
This paper studies the optimal and fair service allocation for a variety of
mobile applications (single or group and collaborative mobile applications) in
mobile cloud computing. We exploit the observation that using tiered clouds,
i.e. clouds at multiple levels (local and public) can increase the performance
and scalability of mobile applications. We proposed a novel framework to model
mobile applications as a location-time workflows (LTW) of tasks; here users
mobility patterns are translated to mobile service usage patterns. We show that
an optimal mapping of LTWs to tiered cloud resources considering multiple QoS
goals such application delay, device power consumption and user cost/price is
an NP-hard problem for both single and group-based applications. We propose an
efficient heuristic algorithm called MuSIC that is able to perform well (73% of
optimal, 30% better than simple strategies), and scale well to a large number
of users while ensuring high mobile application QoS. We evaluate MuSIC and the
2-tier mobile cloud approach via implementation (on real world clouds) and
extensive simulations using rich mobile applications like intensive signal
processing, video streaming and multimedia file sharing applications. Our
experimental and simulation results indicate that MuSIC supports scalable
operation (100+ concurrent users executing complex workflows) while improving
QoS. We observe about 25% lower delays and power (under fixed price
constraints) and about 35% decrease in price (considering fixed delay) in
comparison to only using the public cloud. Our studies also show that MuSIC
performs quite well under different mobility patterns, e.g. random waypoint and
Manhattan models
Effects of alarms on control of robot teams
Annunciator driven supervisory control (ADSC) is a widely used technique for directing human attention to control systems otherwise beyond their capabilities. ADSC requires associating abnormal parameter values with alarms in such a way that operator attention can be directed toward the involved subsystems or conditions. This is hard to achieve in multirobot control because it is difficult to distinguish abnormal conditions for states of a robot team. For largely independent tasks such as foraging, however, self-reflection can serve as a basis for alerting the operator to abnormalities of individual robots. While the search for targets remains unalarmed the resulting system approximates ADSC. The described experiment compares a control condition in which operators perform a multirobot urban search and rescue (USAR) task without alarms with ADSC (freely annunciated) and with a decision aid that limits operator workload by showing only the top alarm. No differences were found in area searched or victims found, however, operators in the freely annunciated condition were faster in detecting both the annunciated failures and victims entering their cameras' fields of view. Thermodynamics, Solubility, and Diffusivity of Oxygen in Titanium and Ti-Al Alloys
Titanium aluminides and titanium aluminide-based composites are attractive candidate materials for high-temperature structural applications. As these materials may be exposed to oxidizing environments durine their use at elevated temperatures, it is essential that they possess a good oxidation resistance. Previous studies have shown that the oxidation resistance of Al-rich alloys in the Ti-Al system is superior to that of the Ti-rich alloys. The scales formed on the surface of the Al-rich and Ti-rich alloys have been reported to be predominantly Al2O3 and TiO2, respectively. Since the relative stabilities of the oxides of Al and Ti at various temperatures and oxygen pressures can be assessed from their thermodynamic data, it is possible, With the help of thermodynamic calculations, to determine the compositions of the alloys which would form scales of Al2O3, TiO(x) or a ternary oxide such as TiAl2O5 during oxidation at a given temperature. The thermodynamic calculations require reliable activity data for the Ti-Al system. These data have not been determined for the entire composition and temperature range of interest. Using the data available in the literature, recently performed thermodynamic calculations and concluded that the stable oxide changed from TiO to Al2O3 in the existence region of the tial phase. In the case of titanium aluminide-based composites, another major concern is the mutual chemical compatibility of the matrix material with the reinforcement phase. Fibers of SiC, TiB2 and Al2O3 are currently being investigated for reinforcement of titanium aluminide matrices
The FEM-2 design method
The FEM-2 parallel computer is designed using methods differing from those ordinarily employed in parallel computer design. The major distinguishing aspects are: (1) a top-down rather than bottom-up design process; (2) the design considers the entire system structure in terms of layers of virtual machines; and (3) each layer of virtual machine is defined formally during the design process. The result is a complete hardware/software system design. The basic design method is discussed and the advantages of the method are considered. A status report on the FEM-2 design is included

Emotions are an indispensable component of variety of texts present on online social media services. A lot of research has been done to detect and analyse the emotions present in text but most of them are done from the author’s perspective. This paper focuses on providing an in-depth survey of different work done in Social Emotion Mining (SEM) from reader’s perspective. It is a first attempt towards categorization of existing literature into emotion mining levels. It also highlights different models and techniques utilized by various authors in this area. Major limitations and challenges in this area of Emotion Detection and Analysis are also presented

Urine Complement Proteins and the Risk of Kidney Disease Progression and Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes.
ObjectiveWe examined the association of urine complement proteins with progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or death in people with type 2 diabetes and proteinuric diabetic kidney disease (DKD).Research design and methodsUsing targeted mass spectrometry, we quantified urinary abundance of 12 complement proteins in a predominantly Mexican American cohort with type 2 diabetes and proteinuric DKD (n = 141). The association of urine complement proteins with progression to ESRD or death was evaluated using time-to-event analyses.ResultsAt baseline, median estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 54 mL/min/1.73 m2 and urine protein-to-creatinine ratio 2.6 g/g. Sixty-seven participants developed ESRD or died, of whom 39 progressed to ESRD over a median of 3.1 years and 40 died over a median 3.6 years. Higher urine CD59, an inhibitor of terminal complement complex formation, was associated with a lower risk of ESRD (hazard ratio [HR] [95% CI per doubling] 0.50 [0.29-0.87]) and death (HR [95% CI] 0.56 [0.34-0.93]), after adjustment for demographic and clinical covariates, including baseline eGFR and proteinuria. Higher urine complement components 4 and 8 were associated with lower risk of death (HR [95% CI] 0.57 [0.41-0.79] and 0.66 [0.44-0.97], respectively); higher urine factor H-related protein 2, a positive regulator of the alternative complement pathway, was associated with greater risk of death (HR [95% CI] 1.61 [1.05-2.48]) in fully adjusted models.ConclusionsIn a largely Mexican American cohort with type 2 diabetes and proteinuric DKD, urine abundance of several complement and complement regulatory proteins was strongly associated with progression to ESRD and death
